On Tuesday (September 26, 2017), women in Saudi Arabia have been granted the right to drive by a royal decree, introducing a major shift in terms of the position of women in this conservative country. The decision will be implemented in June 2018.
“This is one drop before the rain!” Said Manal Al Sharif, an activist in the Women2Drive campaign.
Celebrating Saudi Arabian National Day, few days earlier, for the first time in history women were allowed to enter the sport stadium. It was the first time ever that Saudi Arabian population experienced a mix gender public event ever.
These major changes are part of a package of social and economic reforms that King Mohammed bin Salman plans to implement by 2030.
